Alain Benveniste

Alain's family is from Salonika, home to Greece's largest Jewish community before the war - 50,000 people, the vast majority of whom were deported and murdered at Auschwitz. Alain was eight years old when the order was given to arrest all Greek Jews in November 1942. With his parents, he was sent to Drancy, then freed thanks to the intervention of his older brother, who worked for the Union Générale des Israélites de France (an organization established by the Vichy government's Office of Jewish Affairs). After his brother was rounded up, Alain was sent to a farm in the Sarthe region, west of Paris, where he spent two years. Upon his return, he learned that his parents and brother had been deported.
