Guitel Rosenblum

Guitel Rosenblum was born in Paris in 1932 into a deeply religious Jewish family of eight children. Her parents, originally from Poland, had sought refuge in France and lived in the Marais district of Paris. On July 16, 1942, at the age of 10, Guitel was arrested with her parents, her younger sister Sarah, her sister Pauline, and her brother Isaac during the Vel’ d’Hiv Roundup. Her mother packed a suitcase, still believing they were leaving for a summer camp. A few hours later, they were imprisoned at the Vélodrome d’Hiver. She remembers the unbearable heat, the overcrowding, the cries, and the babies who could not be calmed. Then came the transfer to Pithiviers, where children were torn away from their parents. Behind the barbed wire, Guitel said goodbye to them, unaware that she would never see them again. Her parents, her sister Pauline, and her brother Isaac were deported and murdered at Auschwitz. Thanks to the intervention of their uncle, Guitel and her younger sister Sarah were rescued and survived in hiding until Liberation. [...+]
