Léon Placek

Léon Placek was born on August 19, 1933, in Hussigny, in the Meurthe-et-Moselle region of France. His father, a Polish refugee, enlisted in the military in hopes of obtaining French citizenship. When the war broke out, he joined the French Foreign Legion. He took part in combat, was captured, and sent to Stalag XI B in Hanover. His mother, Itta, a Polish national, returned with her two sons, Léon and Max, to the Paris area in 1942. They were arrested in February 1944, interned at the Drancy transit camp, and deported to the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp on the convoy of May 2, 1944. [...+]
