Jeanine's parents came from Poland in 1928, thinking they could live freely in France. When the war broke out, she was four years old. As soon as the Germans arrived, her father, who had been taken prisoner, knew it was crucial to leave Paris. The little girl was then sent to a Catholic boarding school - a frightening experience that left her with painful memories, despite the presence of her older sister, who was determined to protect her. Hiding in an attic, their parents retrieved her and her sister when the Nazis started searching convents, and took them to a village where they hid together until the end of the war. When Jeanine went back to Belleville, once a Jewish neighborhood, she found out that many of her friends and neighbors had been deported and killed. [...+]
