Leon Schagrin

Leon Schagrin was born in 1926 in Grybów, Poland. His life was forever changed in 1941 when he was captured by the Nazis and sent through a series of concentration camps and ghettos. In 1942, his parents, four sisters, and brother were killed at the Belzec extermination camp. Leon narrowly escaped being sent to Belzec himself, but he was left to bear the unimaginable loss of his entire family.
Despite enduring the horrors of multiple camps, including Auschwitz, Leon survived. After the war, he faced an uphill battle for recognition and justice, spending nearly forty years fighting for compensation from the German government for his suffering during the Holocaust.
In the early 1990s, Leon took on a leadership role within the Holocaust Survivors of South Florida organization, which he helped to found. As a longtime advocate, he has dedicated his life to supporting Holocaust survivors and preserving the memory of those who perished.
